Turbofan Design Parameters

In my Propulsion Systems Class, I was tasked with investigating how the variation of multiple design parameters at once affects engine performance. First, I solved an analytical model of a turbofan engine given flight conditions, stagnation temperature constraints, and a fan pressure ratio.

Once I finished the model, I varied the compressor pressure ratio and bypass ratio to create a carpet plot in MATLAB that showed thrust specific fuel consumption and uninstalled specific thrust. I also created bounds on the carpet plot to rule out unrealistic scenarios. I mapped out the minimum uninstalled specific thrust, which was constrained by the engine’s stall point. I also plotted the maximum thrust specific fuel consumption, which was constrained by cost and fuel capacity.

Takeaways

Through this project, I gained a closer look at real-life design. It is more than finding one design that works; it is about finding the design that works best for the situation. In the case of jet engines, an aircraft's performance requirements and aerodynamic characteristics influence how engine design parameters affect flight.
